Time Flies...A letter to my sisters for life
I am sitting here, in awe that it is quarantine day 1,000,326 but also shocked that today is April 9th, 2020 which marks an extremely special moment in my life. Today, marks three years….t h r e e .. years since I have had the honor, the privilege, they joy, the _____ * fill in the blank with any positive term* of joining the Theta Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Three years ago, I formed a lifelong bond with some of the most inspirational women walking this earth. Three years ago, I entered into a sisterhood that held me to a standard and then opened its arms to helping me achieve and surpass that standard. Three years ago, I said absolutely to a life devoted to serving the community while studying and helping alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature. Three years ago, I became an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman, and my life has changed so much for the better. None of this would have come to fruition the way it did without the love, grace, support and encouragement from my 22 line sisters.
Here is my letter to them:
To my sisters,
They say time flies when you’re having fun-- but through you all I have found that time just flies. It flies when you are learning. And it flies when you are growing.
Time flies when you are adjusting to a new city and have no idea how to navigate it.
Time flies when you just started a new job and you have no idea what to do.
Time flies when you go through an extremely painful loss and have no idea where to turn.
Time flies when you were really rooting for a yes, but instead you get a no.
Time flies when you are trying to decide if you should change jobs...even if it means taking a pay cut.
Time flies when you are struggling to get up some morning but time also flies when you’re eager to get up at 6am for a dental school interview.
Time flies when you are running things in your Emory Masters’ program but time also flies when you have to report to the hospital as a first responder. *s/o to our nurses*
Time flies when you have to plan an entire wedding and graduate and run a chapter but time also flies when you are starting an intensive program at UPenn.
Time flies when you are trying to catch a flight out of Hartsfield-Jackson but time also flies when you are filming the music video.
Time flies when you run google, in Austin, Atlanta or Alaska. It doesn't matter.
Time flies when you make the laws, when you are changing the laws and when you are the law. Carolina law school is lucky.
Time flies...each day we inch away at time -- and I am the most blessed woman to be able to do that alongside educators, lawyers, consultants, community activists, doctors--- comedians, wives...but more than anything, I am the most blessed woman to be able to have you all to call on at any time and know that I will be met with a “whatever you need sis.”
Thank you all for what you contribute not only to our line and our chapter but what you contribute on a daily basis to the world. To my inspirations, my motivations, my loves, my DO OR DIES, here’s to three and forever more.
Love always,
Quad
