Tulum & Vibes: Trip Recap

A few months ago, our friends decided that we wanted to take a nice lil trip for Arsema’s birthday and we landed on TULUM. We were looking for something fun and different where we could bask in luxe experiences (lol). In May, we decided to book the flights (with insurance) and wait it out to see how the pandemic would play out. In the meantime, Sem did some high level planning and booked our Airbnb.

Ultimately when the time came, we felt as though we could make this a safe trip and decided to go. It was honestly such a great time. We were able to safely disconnect and still do a great deal of exploring of the city.

Below we discuss some questions that we received. If you are planning to travel to Tulum, please take some time to look at additional resources and please, please be careful. Happy traveling.

Xoxo,

Mich and Sem

Q: Where did y’all stay

A: We stayed about 5 minutes from downtown Tulum in an Airbnb

Q: How far in advance did y’all plan the trip

A: We bought the tickets in May after seeing ticket prices drop significantly due to the pandemic. Luckily we bought tickets that were refundable given the uncertainty as far as air travel so we were able to jump on a great deal when we found it

Q: How large was the group

A: There were 7 people who went on the trip. It was nice having a big enough group where we were able to feel safe as we traveled through an unfamiliar country. We were also lucky enough to have a few people in our group that knew enough Spanish to communicate with the locals when necessary

Q: What excursions did you all book and how far in advance

A: We went ATVing and booked in-home massages and a private chef. The chef and massages were arranged through our host at our Airbnb. We picked the menu and put a deposit down for dinner a few days before our trip and the massages were a spur of the moment addition to our trip that we mentioned to our host the night before. Our host and the people of Tulum were extremely hospitable and helped us arrange everything we needed so effortlessly. As far as the ATV I did some research and a lot of the prices online seemed more expensive than I had hoped to spend. I decided to wait until we were in Mexico to search around and we happened to find an ATV company that was about half the price of the places we found online.

Q: What was your favorite thing about the trip?

A: The Airbnb was the highlight of the trip. After exploring Tulum during the day we all gathered around the pool every night. It was an excursion on its own and it was so beautiful. The living room had an entire glass wall that overlooked the private pool. Truly, vibes.

Q: Did y’all feel safe

A: Our Airbnb had 5 stars and 35 reviews so we felt we made a good choice as far as our lodging. There was a security system in the home as well as a gate with a camera. Our host also gave us the number to a taxi service and we used them throughout our trip so we didn’t have to hail random cabs around the city. We didn’t go anywhere at night and stayed together as a group. Overall we felt safe however we were cautious about where we went when we went there, and who we went with.

Q: How much spending money should I budget for this trip?

A: Roughly $250 (given what we decided to do -- please note, if you plan on doing more or less activities, this number WILL fluctuate)
